§ 22-1. Definitions.

  • The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this chapter, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:

    Garbage means organic kitchen waste, paper, and food wrappings.

    Potentially Infectious Medical Waste (PIMW) means waste generated in connection with the diagnosis, treatment (i.e., provision of medical services) or immunization of human beings or animals; research pertaining to the provision of medical services; or the provision or testing of biologicals, including, but not limited to, cultures and stocks, human pathological wastes, human or animal blood and blood products, used sharps, unused sharps, animal waste, or isolation waste, or any other PIMW as defined in applicable regulations of the Illinois Pollution Control Board and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Title 35, Illinois Administrative Code, and said regulatory definitions are incorporated herein by reference. PIMW does not include waste, except used or unused sharps, generated as household waste.

    Refuse means rubbish and garbage.

    Rubbish means metal, wood and plastic containers; ordinary household objects, rags, clothing, and rubble.

    Sharps means waste composed of either unused sharps and/or used sharps as defined in this section, with or without residual fluids.

    Unused sharps means waste including but not be limited to, the following unused, discarded sharps: hypodermic, intravenous, or other needles; hypodermic or intravenous syringes; or scalpel blades.

    Used sharps means waste, including, but not limited to, discarded sharps used in animal or human patient care, medical research, or clinical or pharmaceutical laboratories; hypodermic, intravenous, or other medical needles; hypodermic or intravenous syringes; pasteur pipettes; scalpel blades; or blood vials. This waste shall also include, but not be limited to, other types of broken or unbroken glass (including slides and cover slips) in contact with infectious agents.

    Yard waste means yard trimmings, grass clippings, flower stems, leaves and other landscape waste as defined by the State.
