§ 14-556. Signal lamps and signal devices.

  • (a)

    Every motor vehicle and trailer, having a gross weight of at least 3,000 pounds, including the weight of the trailer and the maximum load, shall be equipped with a signal lamp or a signal device constructed and located on the vehicle so as to give a red or yellow signal of intention to stop, and signals of the intention to turn right or left. All of these signals shall be plainly visible and understandable in normal sunlight and at night from a distance of 100 feet to the front and rear. These signals shall not project a glaring or dazzling light. Every new motor vehicle designed for pulling or carrying freight, or designed to carry more than seven people, shall be equipped with a signal device for indicating intent to turn to the right or left. Any trailer with a gross weight of less than 3,000 pounds, including the weight of the trailer and maximum load, need not be equipped with such turn signal device unless the distance from the center of the steering wheel of the towing vehicle to the left-hand inside limits of such trailer body exceeds 24 inches.

    (b)

    All mechanical signal devices shall be self-illuminated when in use at the times mentioned in section 14-552.
